Our Cities – building a productive, sustainable and liveable future.

The Hon Anthony Albanese MP, Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, today announced the release of the National Urban Policy discussion paper, Our Cities – building a productive, sustainable and liveable future.

It marks the start of a national discussion on the way our cities function and how we can make them better for current and future Australians.

The Australian Government appreciates the critical importance that cities will have for the future of the nation as a whole.  Our Cities draws on the State of Australian Cities 2010 report which the Minister launched in March this year.  That report provided a snapshot of Australia’s major cities and highlighted the significant changes they are undergoing and the challenges that lie ahead.

Our Cities seeks your views on the issues and opportunities for our cities.  The outcomes of this consultation will inform the finalisation of the National Urban Policy, scheduled for release in 2011.

The National Urban Policy will be complementary to, and build upon, the COAG Cities agenda and the COAG Reform Council’s current review of strategic metropolitan planning systems for capital cities.  It will also link with the Sustainable Population Strategy and the Regional Australia agenda currently under development.

The consultation period ends on Tuesday 1 March 2011.  Submissions can be made electronically on the website www.majorcities.gov.au/discussion_paper which provides details on how to make a submission. Electronic copies of the discussion paper and background paper are also available on this website.

The Australian Government looks forward to your input in this important national discussion.
